Reason

Is reason really that important? Alasan, justification, excuse.. aren't they all synonyms to 'reason'? The perception that we have when people starts to explain their behavior, usually the socially-frowned-on behaviors, is that they are just giving excuses. They are not sorry of what they have done, they do not regret what they have done because the justification would make the behavior in question to be acceptable. In other words, reasons are given to get an exception.

The reason why I referred to these behaviors as 'socially-frowned-on' is because the behavior might be wrong in the eyes of the people around him/her however, this is because people are judgmental in nature. The behavior would turn to 'socially-accepted' behavior when the reason behind his/her act is made known. Doesn't matter if one might feel that he/she is being 'non-judgmental', as mortals, we are bound to be prejudicial. Prejudice is a partiality that prevents objective consideration of an issue or situation. Human are subjective by nature. Mortals (who aren't mind-readers) can never know the whole story at first instance. In each story, there are multiple sides..be it being told or remained in the heart of the parties. Only Him that is Omniscience (al-'aleem) has the right to judge. In my opinion, the lack of our realization that we are only imperfect beings who have little knowledge, breeds contempt, disdain and disrespect.

So, what I am trying to say is.. not all reasons are excuses. Telling your side of the story is important. Although some things are better left unsaid. Whatever the scenario is, I still find it hard to put myself in someone else's shoe, to be emphatic and understanding when I don't know the whole story. I still have to make conscious effort to understand why people behave the way they do. I believe this trait can be nurtured although to acquire it takes a lot of time and patience. I have a long way to go. InsyaAllah.
